It was only in the last year that I really started to understand the concept of frequencies, filters, EQ, digital sound processing and stuff like that. I think that if I'd had Internet access sooner my life would have been a lot easier in this respect, and my music would have sounded a lot better. Last April I discovered that samples should really be tweaked inside a computer before they're sent to a sampler, and that they should be transferred digitally. I reckon I could probably make a great sounding tune on an Atari and an S950 now – the ones I made at the time sounded a bit listless. I always wondered why cutting engineers would look down their noses at me – my DATs used to have no midrange and never peaked at more than –18dB's. I didn't think these things mattered much but now I know that they do. I was quite blinkered and spent all my time making up music instead of researching into engineering techniques. I also hated working with people so I never picked up any outside knowledge at all.
