millennium

I spent the entire day trying not to think about things, so I bought a bundle of newspapers and headed to the beach. But you know what it's like when you're subconciously preoccupied about something: I kind of read all the words but they didn't actually go into my brain - I found myself re-reading the same paragraphs again and again and again and again.

There was one story, though, that made me laugh, even if it wasn't supposed to be funny... it was something that happened yesterday on the London Eye: the giant Ferris Wheel situated next to Westminster Bridge in London.

Somebody committed suicide in it, in one of the massive glass viewing gondolas.

The mode of death this person had chosen was to slit his wrists and throat with a Stanley knife, and from the newspaper report he'd done a pretty thorough job.

What tickled me was the fact that the London Eye seems to be gradually becoming a showcase for the human life-cycle. Shortly after it opened a couple, inevitably, conducted their wedding in it. Then, not long after that, a different couple had an open shag in the thing - becoming the first members of the Millenium Eye High Club.

And now somebody's ended their life in it.

So the next step is obviously to go the way of so-called reality TV: to have one person live their entire life in one of these gondolas. They'd have to be conceived there, born there, go to school there (private tuition), lose their virginity there, get married there, have children there, slowly grow old there, then eventually get cancer or something and die there.

I found myself wondering what else you could do inside a Millenium Wheel Gondola that would actually be a surprise to the world.

Have you got any ideas? e-mail them here.
