Totally skint with no food and only 22p left on my electricity meter, I returned to the Jobcentre, almost cap in hand. And you know something? The bastards wouldn't even supply me with a replacement giro...

"We can't," they said.
"Why not?" I asked.
"Your giro has to be missing for five days from date of issue."
"But it's not actually missing, I know where it is, I just can't get it."
"That makes no difference," they replied. "You'll have to come in on Friday."

There's nothing else for me to do till then, so I'm going to monitor my electricity meter until it runs out, and then I'm going to bed - where at least it's warm.
