Short Guide to Path of Exile

Path of Exile AKA PoE, falls in the ARPG genre and was developed by a New Zealand based game dev company called Grinding Gear Games (GGG). It was released in 2013 and attracted almost all of Diablo’s players towards itself. Then came its expansions that made the game even more fun to play.

The game starts with the player waking up in a fantasy world called Wraeclast, a continent that once was the hub of a mighty empire and citizen were living a peaceful and prosper life but is now a cursed land where criminals and other unwanted individuals from the nearby Island of Oriath are residing. Regardless of the reasons for their exile, the player must now face the unforgiving wilderness and its dangerous inhabitants amidst the crumbling ruins and bloody secrets of the Eternal Empire and the Vaal civilisation that came before, and band together with other exiles to survive.

The player has to choose from multiple classes available to him; each of them has its own 3 sub classes. The player controls only one Hero with the mouse and the hero can be customised to have different abilities and attributes. You should see the skill tree of this game, it has too many options and the player can customise it according to his own will. All players on a single server can interact with each other in the central town and all areas aside from the central town are generated randomly. Players can make parties with other player or can play solo conquering dungeons, finding rare loot that will increase their attributes. In Path of Exile the items are generated randomly and are items are of the same type but the only difference is that each one of them has some special property and gem sockets that can house gems that increase the items capability. The items are a crucial part of this game as it effects the performance of the player and a player should have such items that make their hero balanced and not too biased on one attribute.

Then there are Active skills and Passive skills, passive skills are those that cannot be activated by pressing a button instead they are always active or get activated under particular circumstances while active skills are those that can be activated by pressing its respective button.  These skills can be made more powerful by linking gems with them, that can increase its attack speed, damage, multiple hits and a lot of other upgrades. There are a total of 1,325 passive skills that can be chosen by the player when his Hero level ups. There is a passive skill tree which looks very complex at first, it has separate place for each attribute’s skills but the player can maximize any attribute’s skill and not just its main attribute. Each class has three Ascendancy classes to choose from, except for the Scion, who only has one Ascendancy class that combines the elements of all other Ascendancy classes.

Path of Exile unusually doesn’t have ordinary in-game currency and the game runs on bartering items with one another. PoE currency system revolves around a variety of different scrolls and orbs. Most common are Exalted Orbs. These orbs are used to modify armours, weapons etc.

In the end I would say that I highly appreciate the freedom Path of Exile offers and the capability of being truly great action RPGs of the time, I never really got addicted to it. it’s like a Gaming PC for people who enjoy building a beast PC that would run every game on 4k display more than actually PLAYING the games. But maybe I am addicted to Dota that’s why I did not get fond of PoE but anyone who liked Diablo II and hasn’t switched then they must as it adapts most of the things from Diablo II and have also added a lot of other and better things in the gameplay.
